My career at Novacroft – our #SuperNovaStories
I love working here, hand on heart I do
Diane is our superstar Receptionist & HR Administrator, the first person you’ll meet at Novacroft, and the first person we’re interviewing in our special 2018 #SuperNovaStories series of interviews to celebrate Novacroft’s twentieth anniversary.
Diane has a passion for house renovation, a wicked sense of humour and can always make us smile.
What’s your role at Novacroft?
I meet and greet people. I am the first person people see when they come to Novacroft. Really, I’m the face of Novacroft.
When did you start your Novacroft journey?
November 2013. I started out as receptionist, and that’s grown into HR admin. I like to be involved. HR is a good way to do that.
What do you remember about your first day at Novacroft?
What’s stuck in my mind is how polite and smiley everyone was. It was like they really loved being at work. I thought I might’ve just been seeing an especially good day! Now I know that’s Novacroft’s normal. It’s just carried on, and it’s tip top.
What does a typical day look like for you?
I welcome our guests, I give them the all-important introductory talks, refreshments, make them comfortable. I answer a lot of phone calls. I support teams, I help collect fundraising for our charities, I set up for meetings. I’m often to be spotted walking the floor with my earpiece and my trusty trolley!
We’re on the second floor, so the stairs feature highly in my days. People are becoming hugely health conscious and more and more of our visitors are using them. It’s challenging on the legs! I used to wear heels – now it’s comfy flat shoes!
Can you name three things that are essential to doing your job?
Being happy, cheery, and approachable.
What do you love about your job?
It has to be the people. I enjoy chatting and getting to know everyone. A great opportunity to do that comes with all the walking around I do every day. I’ve been asked if I know the names of everyone that works here – well, I do my very best! I think it’s so important to make people feel comfortable, put them at their ease.
I’ve nurtured my position into helping different departments, being there, supporting them. The things I do may appear trivial to them but they’re important for me.
I also love the feedback opportunities. Soon after I started, I was invited to a ‘Breakfast Club’ discussion and feedback session and I mentioned something that I thought could be improved. Straight away I was given the opportunity to make it better. I felt like I was trusted. It was a massive confidence boost. That went a long way towards helping me settle in.
What’s been your biggest challenge here?
Names. I pride myself on knowing everybody. I’m reluctant to say that though – it’s like setting people a challenge to test me!
What’s your most memorable Novacroft moment?
The awards. Without a doubt. I won the Customer Service Award in 2014 at our annual Novacroft Superhero Awards. It took me so by surprise. I’d only been here for twelve months. It was a tremendous achievement to be nominated by so many people.
If you could switch jobs for a day with anyone else at Novacroft, who would it be?
Sarah, Novacroft’s Graphic Designer. Sarah has a flair for producing fantastic creative pieces of work. I’d love to have a go, she’s quite an inspiration.
If you could have a superpower, what would it be?
Beam me up, Scottie! So I don’t have to do the stairs – I could fly!
What is your biggest achievement – personal or professional?
It’s got to be my family. Keeping them all happy. And they are happy, and successful. Family is everything to me.
What do you do when you’re not at Novacroft?
I’m regularly carting barrows of earth around my garden, in the interests of landscaping it. My husband and I have owned a brick, rendered and now a stone house and renovated them all, doing as much as we can ourselves. I love it.
What advice would you give to new Novacrofters?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Work hard, play equally as hard. Enjoy life here.
Novacroft is a fantastic company and you’ll be so so lucky to be a part of it. I’ve only got praise for this place. The fact that we’re celebrating twenty years is a testament to Debra [CEO & Founder] and the culture she’s built. I love working here, hand on heart I do.
